On August 12, 2026, millions gathered in Spain to witness a spectacular total solar eclipse. The event was notably highlighted by a stunning solar prominence, captured beautifully by Ciel & Espace.
In the autonomous community of Castile and León, at the exact time predicted by celestial mechanics, the Moon completely obscured the Sun. A dark Sun appeared in the Spanish sky, positioned 8° above the horizon. A vibrant pink solar prominence glowed on the lower left limb of the Sun, while the white corona extended 360°, creating a unique twilight atmosphere.
To document this extraordinary moment, the team from Ciel & Espace positioned themselves near the line of totality, approximately 50 kilometers west of Soria. Nearly half a million viewers enjoyed the live stream of the event, filmed through a telescope. This record attendance underscores the unparalleled excitement that solar eclipses can generate.
The Spectacle in France
The eclipse of August 12, 2026, is likely to leave a lasting impression similar to that of the total eclipse on August 11, 1999, which was also visible in France. This time, while the Sun's disappearance was not total across the country, over 90% of obscuration sparked significant interest among the French public. The French Astronomy Association, which coordinated the event nationwide, distributed 230,000 pairs of eclipse glasses, including over 15,000 in the final moments, ensuring that many could safely enjoy the phenomenon.
