This center, known as the barycenter, is located just outside the Sun's surface due to Jupiter's immense mass.

Historical Context

The concept of planetary motion has evolved significantly since Galileo first turned his telescope to Jupiter in 1610. He observed four small moons that shifted positions each night, proving that they orbited Jupiter rather than the Earth. This groundbreaking discovery challenged the geocentric model that placed Earth at the center of the universe. Today, NASA applies the same fundamental principle: when two masses exert gravitational forces on each other, they do not remain stationary; they both orbit their common barycenter.

The Barycenter Outside the Sun

For smaller planets, the barycenter typically lies within the Sun. However, Jupiter's mass, which is more than twice that of all the other planets combined, shifts this point approximately 750,000 kilometers away from the center of our star, placing it just outside the Sun's surface.
