Ancient European Astronomy: Insights into Early Celestial Knowledge

Ancient European civilizations had advanced knowledge of celestial movements, mathematics, and geometry, leading to significant astronomical constructions for observational purposes.

The ancient inhabitants of Europe possessed a remarkable understanding of celestial movements, mathematics, and geometry. They constructed significant structures to facilitate observational astronomy, enabling them to determine solstices and equinoxes, as well as predict eclipses.

The astronomers of megalithic cultures exhibited astonishing knowledge of celestial mechanics and practical geometry. Evidence of their advanced understanding can be seen in the arrangement of massive stone structures (megaliths), some weighing over 25 tons, which are laid out according to regular geometric patterns found in various parts of the world.

Many of these stone circles were erected to mark the rising and setting of the Sun and Moon at specific times of the year. Notably, they indicated the eight extreme positions of the Moon during its 21-day declination cycle between full moons.

Several of these ancient observatories have survived to the present day, with the most renowned being Stonehenge in England and the alignments at Carnac in France.

Stonehenge, one of the most extensively studied sites, was constructed in several phases between 2200 and 1600 BCE. Its use as an astronomical instrument allowed the megalithic people to create a relatively accurate calendar and predict celestial events such as lunar and solar eclipses.

Located at 51 degrees north latitude, Stonehenge was designed with the knowledge that the angle between the sunrise on the summer solstice and the southernmost point of the Moon's rise is a right angle. The stone circle, divided into 56 segments, could be utilized to track the Moon's position throughout the year, as well as to determine the dates of the summer and winter solstices and predict solar eclipses.

These stone circles provided the megalithic people of Europe with a reliable calendar, a crucial requirement for establishing organized agricultural communities after the last Ice Age, around 10,000 BCE.

Despite their advancements in using the heavens to regulate daily life, early Europeans continued to revere celestial bodies, viewing them as residences or manifestations of powerful deities that exerted control over the world.
