In the Centaurus constellation, located 10,000 light-years away from Earth, a white dwarf is in the process of formation—though it will take several thousand years for it to fully develop.

As a star like our Sun reaches the end of its life cycle, it transitions into a red giant before ultimately becoming a white dwarf. This transformation is captured in a stunning image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, illustrating this transitional phase.

Understanding the Phenomenon

A star generates light through nuclear fusion, a process that exerts outward pressure, striving to "explode" the star. Conversely, the force of gravity pulls matter toward the star's center. The balance between these two forces maintains the star's stability. However, there comes a time when the fuel gauge runs low. As nuclear fusion wanes, gravity prevails, leading to the star's implosion.

The core of the star collapses inward, while its outer layers are expelled, releasing vast quantities of material into the surrounding space.

This photograph, also captured by Hubble in August 2019, depicts the white dwarf enveloped by its halo of expelled material. In a few thousand years, this halo will disperse into the cosmos.
