CEPHEUS
The constellation Cepheus, located in the northern sky, symbolizes the legendary Ethiopian king Cepheus, who is married to Cassiopeia and is the father of Andromeda. Recognized as one of the 88 modern constellations, it also ranks among the 48 constellations cataloged by the ancient astronomer Ptolemy.
Cassiopeia, known for her beauty, was the mother of Andromeda and the wife of King Cepheus. Her vanity led her to boast that she and her daughter were more beautiful than the Nereids, sea nymphs who, in retaliation, appealed to Poseidon, the god of the sea. In response, Poseidon sent the sea monster Cetus to wreak havoc along the coast of Cepheus's kingdom.
To resolve the crisis, Cepheus consulted the oracle of Ammon, who advised him to sacrifice his daughter Andromeda by chaining her to a rock, thus offering her to the monster. While Andromeda was presented as a sacrifice to Cetus, Perseus, returning from his quest after slaying Medusa, spotted her and instantly fell in love. He proposed to Cepheus that he would save Andromeda in exchange for her hand in marriage. Perseus defeated the monster and subsequently married Andromeda.
The figure of Cepheus, as Andromeda's father, has been shaped by the will of Athena.
Notable Stars in Cepheus

Alpha (α): Known as Alderamin, this star has a magnitude of 2.47 and translates from Arabic to mean "the right arm," although it actually represents the back of the Ethiopian king. It is a white star located approximately 48 light-years away.

Beta (β): This star, called Alfrik, means "flock" and marks the vertex of Cepheus's bust. With a magnitude of 3.23 and a blue hue, it is situated at the center of the constellation, around 595 light-years from Earth. Alfrik is part of a binary system, with its companion star of magnitude 8 located 14 arcseconds away, equivalent to over 4,300 astronomical units.

Gamma (γ): Known as Alrai, this star is located at the vertex of the constellation, close to the celestial north pole. It has a magnitude of 3.22 and an orange color, being approximately 13.80 light-years distant.

Delta (δ): A variable star with a magnitude of 4.07, Delta is a prototype of the Cepheid variable stars, characterized by its light curve that pulsates in size and brightness over periods that are precisely equal. Its brightness fluctuates from 3.60 to 4.30 over just over five days, and it is located about 980 light-years from Earth. Another known Cepheid is h Aquilae.

Mu (μ): This star has a magnitude of 4.20 and exhibits a reddish hue, appearing as a bright drop of purple. Discovered by W. Herschel, it was termed the "garnet star." A supergiant, Mu is approximately 1,500 times larger than our Sun and is a Mira-type variable star, oscillating between periods of 90 and 4,700 days. It is situated about 5,300 light-years away. The light curve for this star was recorded in the summer of 1988.
