The constellation Cepheus, located in the northern sky, symbolizes the legendary Ethiopian king, Cepheus, who was married to Cassiopeia and was the father of Andromeda. It is recognized as one of the 88 modern constellations and is among the 48 constellations cataloged by Ptolemy.

Cassiopeia, the mother of Andromeda and wife of Cepheus, was known for her vanity regarding her beauty, which led her to boastfully challenge the Nereids. In retaliation, the Nereids appealed to Poseidon, the god of the seas, who unleashed the sea monster Cetus upon their shores, wreaking havoc on the land.

In a desperate attempt to save his kingdom, Cepheus sought guidance from the oracle of Ammon. The oracle advised him to sacrifice his daughter, Andromeda, by chaining her to a rock as an offering to the monster. Thus, Andromeda was set to face Cetus. However, Perseus, returning from his quest where he defeated Medusa, spotted Andromeda and instantly fell in love with her. He proposed to Cepheus that he would rescue her in exchange for her hand in marriage. Perseus ultimately vanquished the beast and married Andromeda.

Cepheus, as the father of Andromeda, is often depicted under the influence of Athena.

Key Stars in Cepheus

  • Alpha (α) Cephei: Known as Alderamin, this star has a magnitude of 2.47 and translates from Arabic to "the right arm," although it actually represents the back of the Ethiopian king. Alderamin is a white star located approximately 48 light-years away.

  • Beta (β) Cephei: This star, called Alfrik, which means "flock," marks the king's bust and has a magnitude of 3.23. It is situated at the center of the constellation and is about 595 light-years away. Alfrik is part of a binary system, with a companion star of magnitude 8 located 14 arcseconds away, equivalent to over 4,300 astronomical units.

  • Gamma (γ) Cephei: Known as Alrai, this star is positioned at the vertex of the constellation and near the celestial north pole. It has a magnitude of 3.22 and exhibits an orange hue, lying approximately 13.80 light-years from Earth.

  • Delta (δ) Cephei: This variable star, with a magnitude of 4.07, serves as a prototype for a class of variable stars known as Cepheids. Delta Cephei pulsates in size and brightness with regular periods, fluctuating between magnitudes 3.60 and 4.30 over just over five days. It is located around 980 light-years away.

  • Mu (μ) Cephei: This red variable star has a magnitude of 4.20 and appears as a bright drop of purple. Discovered by W. Herschel, it is classified as a supergiant, approximately 1,500 times larger than our Sun, and belongs to the Mira type of variable stars, oscillating between periods of 90 and 4,700 days. Mu Cephei is situated about 5,300 light-years from Earth, and its light curve was recorded in the summer of 1988.
