Introduction:

Ursa Minor, commonly known as the Little Dipper, is a prominent constellation in the northern hemisphere, alongside its more famous counterpart, Ursa Major. This constellation comprises seven stars that outline a shape reminiscent of a dipper. Four of these stars form the bowl of the dipper, while the remaining three represent its handle. The most notable star within Ursa Minor is Polaris, also known as the North Star. Due to its specific location in the sky, it is exclusively visible in the northern hemisphere throughout the entire year.

Mythology and History:

According to Greek mythology, the god Zeus became enamored with the nymph Callisto, who was a follower of the goddess Diana. Disguising himself, Zeus approached Callisto and eventually seduced her. When Callisto became pregnant, Diana discovered the truth and expelled her from the group during a bathing ritual. Hera, Zeus's wife, learned of Callisto's child, Arkas, and in a fit of jealousy, transformed Callisto into a bear, represented by Ursa Minor.

Years later, Arkas encountered Callisto in her bear form and, fearing for his life, attempted to kill her. Zeus, recognizing their relationship, placed both mother and son in the sky as neighboring constellations. Enraged, Hera sought out the ocean deities Thethys and Oceanus, requesting that Ursa Major never touch the waters. Thus, according to myth, the Great Bear remains forever above the horizon.

Characteristics:

Ursa Minor is characterized by several distinctive features:

  • Its shape closely resembles that of Ursa Major, though its stars are dimmer and it is situated farther from the Milky Way's equator.
  • The constellation has a sparse distribution of stars and lacks both stellar and globular clusters.
  • The most significant aspect of Ursa Minor is Polaris, which has a magnitude of 2.1 and serves as a reliable indicator of true north for those in the northern hemisphere.
  • It is exclusively visible in the northern hemisphere and cannot be seen from the southern hemisphere.

Main Stars:

  • Alpha (α), known as Polaris, has a magnitude of 2.00 and a yellow hue. It is the true North Star for northern observers, located 431 light-years from Earth and classified as a supergiant, shining 2,300 times brighter than the Sun.

  • Beta (β), referred to as Kocak, has a magnitude of 2.06 and an orange color. Along with gamma (γ), it forms part of the so-called guardians of Polaris, orbiting around it. Kocak is situated 126 light-years away and is 185 times more luminous than the Sun.

  • Gamma (γ), known as Pherkad, has a magnitude of 3.02 and appears white. It is located 480 light-years from Earth and is classified as a white giant, shining 1,140 times brighter than our Sun.
