Located in the constellation Leo, K2-18b orbits a red dwarf star approximately 110 light-years away from Earth. It is larger than our planet, with a surface gravity that is stronger, suggesting the presence of intense radiation. Thus, while it may be a fascinating celestial body, it is not likely to be a desirable vacation spot.
Astronomers from the Center for Space Exochemistry Data in London have analyzed observations from the Hubble Space Telescope taken in 2016 and 2017 regarding the K2-18b system. They developed an algorithm to examine the light filtered by K2-18b's atmosphere, which revealed the signature of water vapor. The analysis also detected hydrogen and helium in the atmosphere.
K2-18b has garnered significant attention from scientists because, if studies confirm the findings, it could be the only known candidate with liquid water on a solid surface.
