Is Artemis II Ready for Liftoff?

The Artemis II mission is slated for launch on February 6, marking the beginning of a launch window that extends through April. NASA has opted for an early attempt at liftoff, shifting from an initial consideration of a March launch.

The crew set to embark on this historic mission includes:

  • Christina Koch (NASA/USA)
  • Reid Wiseman (NASA/USA)
  • Vic Glover (NASA/USA)
  • Jeremy Hansen (CSA/Canada)

Christina Hammock Koch serves as the mission specialist and is on her second mission. During her first journey, she spent 328 days aboard the International Space Station, setting the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman.

Gregory Reid Wiseman is the commander for this mission, also marking his second flight, with his first being in 2014 aboard the ISS during Expeditions 40-41.

Victor Jerome Glover acts as the pilot, having previously flown on Crew-1 in 2020-2021 at the ISS, making this his second mission as well.

Jeremy Roger Hansen, the mission specialist, is making his inaugural spaceflight. He holds the distinction of being the first Canadian astronaut to participate in a lunar mission.

The launch is set to take place from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, utilizing the LC-39 launch pad, which has been modified to accommodate NASA's Space Launch System (SLS). This historic site has previously hosted Apollo missions and Space Shuttle launches.

Artemis II aims to conduct a lunar flyby rather than a landing, with no equipment designated for touching down on the Moon's surface. The mission is expected to last approximately 9 to 10 days, allowing for the testing of various systems in preparation for longer-duration missions in the future.
