The 9th Edition of Chianti Topics: Focus on Exoplanet Atmospheres
On June 9-10-11, the Chianti Multifunctional Observatory will host the 9th Chianti Topics International Focus Workshop on Atmospheres, focusing on challenges in remote detection of planetary atmospheres.

On June 9-10-11, the Chianti Multifunctional Observatory will host the 9th Chianti Topics International Focus Workshop on Atmospheres, a unique and inspiring event dedicated to exploring the "current challenges in the remote detection of planetary atmospheres."

This workshop, aimed at researchers, offers the opportunity for deep interaction with other researchers, experts, postdoctoral students, and PhD candidates from around the world.
The event focuses on the current obstacles in the remote detection of planetary atmospheres. It will serve as a dedicated forum for discussing the ambiguities and model dependencies related to deriving atmospheric properties, such as composition and structure, from observational data. The event aims to assess the critical issues of existing acquisition techniques, explore the development of more robust and sophisticated models, and promote discussion on mitigating observational biases by quantifying uncertainties. The goal is to encourage cross-validation of methods applied to different targets, from well-constrained atmospheres of the Solar System to exoplanetary environments with often limited data.
What is Chianti Topics
Chianti Topics represents the living soul of the Observatory, conceived not as a traditional conference but as a place for genuine exchange among diverse voices: from established scholars to young researchers, including PhD candidates and post-docs. Given the limited number of participants, not only can everyone listen to colleagues' presentations, but they can also ask questions, engage in discussions, and build shared proposals, creating a model that values equal dialogue and the cross-pollination of ideas. It is thus a true hub of scientific co-creation, where the fresh insights of young researchers directly confront internationally renowned experts. The collaborative and informal environment set in the Tuscan countryside fosters intense exchanges, which begin in the Q&A sessions but continue during breaks and social events.
This format has already taken shape over various editions, during which broad topics have been discussed, always with a common thread related to astronomical research. The inaugural edition was dedicated to exoplanets, a central theme of the Observatory's scientific activities. Subsequently, on two occasions, the focus shifted to the use of small telescopes in numerous networks, with up to ten coordinated instruments capable of complementing large observatories. Another cycle addressed planets in the laboratory, referring to experimental activities aimed at simulating in a controlled environment the conditions that characterize planetary scenarios. Last year's edition concluded a sort of trilogy of meetings dedicated to planetary environments: atmospheres, habitability environments. The theme selected this year reflects the intention to periodically revisit this framework and complete a thematic path every three years.

The next event will take place this autumn, addressing the timely and socially relevant theme of light pollution. Chianti Topics thus becomes an integral part of the OPC's vision: not just a scientific update appointment, but an interdisciplinary and intergenerational laboratory, capable of preparing the next generation of astronomers and physicists to embark on an exciting and stimulating field of research.
