According to distributor Adastra Cinema, the film also marked a record start for studio A24. In the global box office, 'Backrooms' has grossed $118 million against a budget of approximately $10 million.
The film was directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, known as Kane Pixels. He became the youngest director in history whose film topped the global box office.
At the same time, following the premiere, attention was drawn to Parsons' participation in a Zoom session with Russian viewers during one of the film's screenings in Moscow. A video featuring the director on the big screen was published by Russian journalist Vadim Elistratov. The meeting was likely organized by the Russian distributor 'Volga,' which released the film in Russia.
'Backrooms' is based on the popular internet phenomenon Backrooms—a creepy labyrinth of empty office spaces that went viral due to its atmosphere of anxiety and a sense of confinement.
The main roles in the film are played by Renate Reinsve, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Evan Jogia.
